The event will be held upstairs in Half Acre Hall and will be hosted by Lagunitas’ “beer weasel” Ron Lindenbusch. Six of Lagunitas’ beers will be paired with a specially selected five-course menu. Featured pairings include the Dog Town Pale Ale with a salad of mixed greens and goat cheese; the India Pale Ale with a filet of salmon with tarragon chive sauce; the Maximus Imperial IPA with peanut- and spice-rubbed chicken satay with curried rice pilaf; the Cruising with Ruben & The Jets Stout with artisan sausages over beer-braised cabbage; the Old Gnarly Wine as stand-alone feature; and the Brown Shugga with molten chocolate lava cake à la mode with raspberry drizzle.

Ron is expected to bring a vintage Brown Shugga for a vertical sampling. It is a rare opportunity for us to have someone like Ron come and speak to our loyal beerknurds. We are saving space for only 45 people to make it more informative and interactive for those who attend.

Matt has a treat for those of you who plan to attend.  A Cask of HopSlam that will be tapped at 7 PM SHARP. Mark your calendars – it will not last long! This beer is a Double or Imperial IPA with over 100 IBU’s and just at 10 % abv. Go easy, it goes down easier than you’d think.

Flying Saucer – Beer Mecca

posted on in None

Comments : I would just like to say thank you for showing me what a beer bar really should be. I am overwhelmed with every single aspect of the experience of your bar. In an instant, it became my beer mecca. I only wish I had one nearby. I will have to visit my father in law more often!

Thank you,
-Andrew Sean Killilea

Andrew – Thank you for the kind words. I love to see this type of e-mail because I know all of us work hard to present each beer at its very best. We appreciate you and the rest of the customers that frequent the Saucer.

Allagash’s Rob Tod in Austin – February 26th

posted on February 17, 2009 in None

Okay, my friends, Rob Tod will be with us at the Flying Saucer in Austin for a little meet and greet on Thursday, February 26th from 5 – 7 PM.

As many of you know, Rob was scheduled to speak at a tutored tasting on Groundhog Day, but he has a mishap in Maine that prevented him from coming.

He will be on hand to discuss beer and to help us distribute some special brew to those of you who attended. Hell, even if you didn’t attend, come out to shake his hand and drink some world-class beer.

Keep the Integrity

In 1995, while constructing our first beer menu, we thought – how in the world are we going to get our customers to drink all of these fantastic beers? We figured you would need an incentive to order a Felinfoel Bitter or an Aass Bock. That day, the UFO Club was born.

The club is intended to be fun and educational. We never imagined that folks like Frank the Tank would go around the Ring of Honor TWENTY TIMES. Keep going Frank, we love you man.

We want all of you to learn about the small craft breweries that crank out world-class beers and to spread the word about their quality to your friends and families. Our belief is that you guys will help keep the beer movement alive by seeking out these beers at your local markets and drinking them at your local Saucer. We do our part by helping bring these beers to the market place and by choosing to support the breweries that we think are doing things right.

BEERKNURDS  help make the Flying Saucer thrive. We appreciate your patronage and your love for good beer.

Lately – we have notices that many members are CHEATING the system. It doesn’t really make sense to me why someone would drink one beer and submit a slip for another, but it was happening. You may have noticed a few changes in procedure lately. This is purely an effort to keep the integrity of the club.

Work hard, play hard & drink good beer.

Highland Tastings in Charlotte

logo_highland_breweryOscar Wong, owner of Highland Brewing Company will be on hand Thrusday, February 19th to host a tutored tasting and food pairing.

We will feature six Highland beers including the Imperial Black Mocha Stout. Each beer will be paired with various cheeses and meats. The final beer will be paired with chocolate truffles and the match works incredibly well.

In 2006, Highland began a tradition of releasing an imperial version of one of their brews each September at Asheville’s Brewgrass Festival.   First was Imperial Gaelic followed by Imperial Kashmir IPA.  This year’s offering was Imperial Black Mocha Stout,  rich with coffee and chocolate notes.

Most of you know Highland’s story but to hear it from the man himself should be a good time. Make reservations NOW as space is limited. The tasting will begin at 6:30 PM .

Ticket Price: $25 for Members and $30 for non-members.

terrapinbeerFebruary 26th the Flying Saucer in Columbia will host Terrapin’s Dustin Watts for a special beer and food pairing. A five-course, Low Country-style meal will be prepared by Chef Jeff.

These dinners usually sell out, so don’t waste time – book now. The beers will be Sun Ray (Wheat), Rye Pale, Gamma Ray (Wheat-wine), Wake-n-Bake (Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout – these guys sound like stoners) & Dos Cocoas (chocolate porter).

Terrapin Beer Co was founded in 2002 and they have really been making a name for themselves. They took the GOLD at the GABF for their American Pale Ale during their first year. Nice.
